7 Tips For What to Do When You’ve Lost Your Car Keys

It happens to people every day, usually at the least convenient moment. We all know how frustrating it is not to be able to get into your car.  You may have lost your keys, broken them or damaged them, or if you’re a little luckier, maybe you’ve just locked your keys in your car.  Even so, it is a situation which can be extremely stressful.

Lost keys can be quite costly to replace not to mention the cost in time waiting for replacements from the dealership or manufacturer.  If you haven’t got your spare keys to hand, you may fear that you’re stuck.  But before resorting to anything drastic, here are a few tips and tricks you may want to try:

Don’t Panic!

The worst thing you can do in this situation is panic.  Take a few deep breaths, and start to think about the options available to you.

Check Everythingcar-key-on-key-ring

Thoroughly check your pockets and bags for your keys. Try retracing your steps, if you have a smart tracker on your key chain or fob, you will want to activate it now.  This is naturally going to be the first step you take if you feel you’ve lost car keys for good.

Check for Spares

Did you make any spares of your lost car keys?  Does a friend or family member have access to your vehicle via a second key or fob?  In which case, try to look for alternatives.  It is always worth making spares of your keys.  If you haven’t lost your car keys before now, do make sure you cut spares in case the worst-case scenario does occur.

Carefully Access Your Car – If You Can

Here at Vehicle Key Services, we have all the professional tools necessary to open your car without your keys.  However, you may wish to try gaining access yourself.  However, it’s unlikely you will have any tools to hand which can give you the same ease of access.  Therefore, rather than risking injury or voiding your vehicle’s warranty, make sure you call the experts.

Not to mention, trying to gain access yourself could result in someone assuming you are breaking in – which may lead to a very awkward conversation with a police officer.

If It’s An Emergency – Call The Police

In case of an emergency – such as if a child or pet is trapped in a hot car and you don’t have the keys – you may feel it’s necessary to break a window.  In this case, do make sure you call the police as a priority.  They will be best equipped to take action.  If you absolutely cannot wait for the emergency services to arrive, you may be able to break the glass safely yourself.

However, the safest thing to do will be to call our team directly, and we will head out to you as soon as possible.  In the meantime, keep trying to contact the emergency services, who will be sure to help you regain access.  The best thing to do in this kind of emergency is, again, not to panic.  Help can always be at hand.

Call Your Insurance Provider

It’s worth bearing in mind that you may be covered for lost keys as part of your vehicle insurance policy.  Contacting your insurance company can ensure you are reimbursed for a call out and any replacements.  They will also be able to provide you with any details you may need to confirm ownership of the vehicle in case of a call out.
